Titles & Chairs | Lane Powell

When I started at Lane Powell the website was in the final review stages and I got to be a part of it, which was an exciting endeavor. When it launched we got to pop champagne and celebrate quickly proceeded by waiting for the reviews to come in hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. As with any website redesign alongside a rebrand there's always a mix of positives and a mix of not so positives, it's par for the course.

A six after the new site went live attorneys started voicing concerns over a few different issues around their titles. This came up for various reasons, some people felt all their titles should be visible throughout the site. Other's felt it was important to highlight the Chairs and Co-Chairs of a practice. At that time outside of their individual bio page attorneys were only identified by their searchable title; Associate, Shareholder, Counsel to the Firm and in case of our leadership President and Vice President.

The challenge is some attorneys have upwards of 3-4 titles and most instances on the site there just wasn't room within in the current structure of the site. That said, we recognized that there was a time and place for such callouts and through listening to the attorneys we were able to see where the misstep was.

Currently, Practice pages showcased a team's attorneys on a carousel in alpha order. The thought being, alpha was the safest to avoid ego, but we weren't entirely right. Yes, the argument could be made for it, but it overlooks the very important women and men who lead these groups who deserve a little spotlight and we found they were nowhere!

This was a total oversite that needed to be rectified and in that leadership also wanted to see what it would look like with everyone's searchable titles under their images in the carousels and what it would look like for numerous titles to appear on the leadership pages carousel. We also wanted to create a space on the Practice pages where the user could quickly access the Practice Chair's contact information.

There were a couple concerns around including full titles for everyone. For example, there were too many instances where titles might run to a second line. Additionally, if we were to include multiple titles there would be huge space disparities since there were Associates who's only title was Associate up against Shareholder with four. In both these instances the carousels start to become a mess of image and text with no real hierarchy, with everything pulling for the user's attention and none of them really getting it. Again it's about the right time and place.

Ultimately leadership approved to only showcase the Chair and Co-Chair titles on the practice page. This would move the Chairs and Co-Chairs to the front of the line followed by the rest of the team members in alpha order and we'd also add a "Contact Us" section in the left-hand with each of the Chairs contact information.

The Leadership page was a different story. It was felt that it was important in this instance to highlight all that these members brought to the firm and all their titles should be listed. Even though this solution wasn't ideal it was achievable and luckily for this page the carousel aspect of the module wasn't necessary so we didn't need to worry about spacing issues when swiping to the next group.
